FUE hair transplantation technique

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is an advanced hair transplantation technique that involves the precise extraction of hair follicles one by one. This procedure is performed using special micro-needle devices with a diameter of 0.7 to 0.9 mm, known as “punches”, which carefully collect follicles from the donor region – a part of the scalp that is resistant to factors that cause hair loss. These follicles are then transplanted to the targeted bald area using precise tools, resulting in minimal scarring and no visible marks.

Unlike previous methods that involved removing a portion of the scalp, followed by the application of bandages and surgical sutures, which often resulted in painful scars, the FUE technique is considered painless. Full recovery usually occurs within 7-8 days after hair transplantation, allowing patients to quickly return to normal activities.

Advantages of the FUE method

The FUE method stands out as an extremely effective and reliable hair transplantation method, offering patients numerous advantages and high-quality results.

Faster healing process: Compared to other hair transplant techniques, the FUE technique allows for a significantly shorter recovery time.

Minimal postoperative discomfort: After the procedure, patients usually do not experience discomfort such as tension or loss of sensation in the transplant area.

Greater number of grafts: the FUE technique enables the collection of a greater number of grafts, providing a wider possibility of achieving the desired results.

Gold standard in hair transplantation: It is considered the gold standard in the field of hair transplantation due to its precision and minimal invasiveness.

Avoidance of scars: Since no surgical incision is made, there is no risk of creating a visible scar.

High success rate: This technique has a high success rate in the permanent growth and quality of transplanted hair follicles.

How do we perform FUE hair transplantation?

FUE hair transplantation requires detailed planning, careful preparation and a precise execution process, as well as a careful post-operative recovery period. Before the procedure itself, the expert team of Polyclinic Dijamant first assesses the density and quality of the hair in the donor area using special hair analysis devices. This analysis allows us to precisely determine the number of follicular units – grafts that we can get from the donor area, that is, from the nape of the neck.

By defining the area requiring transplantation, we determine how many hair follicles (grafts) need to be transplanted to a specific area of the scalp and check whether the donor area has sufficient reserves to meet that need. We also determine the optimal hair growth line and inform the patient in detail about expectations and possibilities.

The FUE hair transplant operation itself goes through several key phases, with each step requiring precision, diligence and meticulousness to result in success and patient satisfaction. This procedure is performed in our clinic by a team of experts from Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina who are educated and specially trained in this transplantation method. This procedure is performed with special care to ensure natural and aesthetically pleasing results.

What is FUE hair transplantation?

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) is a hair transplant method where individual grafts (follicles) are extracted from the donor region (occipital region) and transplanted into hairless or thinning areas. At the Poliklinika Dijamant Sarajevo , the plan is made individually according to the hairline, density and quality of the donor region.

A good candidate is a person with a sufficiently strong donor region and stable hair loss (often androgenetic alopecia). The best assessment is provided by a scalp examination and graft plan at the Poliklinika Dijamant Sarajevo .

FUE is not ideal for very weak donor areas, active scalp inflammation, uncontrolled chronic diseases, clotting disorders, or unrealistic expectations. Therefore, at Poliklinika Dijamant, we recommend a review by our hair transplant specialists, led by Adem Kazan, before deciding on the procedure.

Androgenetic alopecia in men and women with a stable pattern of hair loss; clearly defined areas of thinning or baldness with a healthy donor area ; correction of previous transplantation or minor scars on the scalp ; cases where selection of follicles from different regions or more precise extraction of grafts is required ; hair transplantation when there is good density and quality of donor hair, a healthy scalp and realistic expectations of the patient.

Diffuse alopecia without a pattern, i.e. when the donor region is not certain; active scarring alopecia, such as lichen planopilaris and discoid lupus; alopecia areata in the active phase; poor donor area or too low donor hair density; unrealistic expectations; poorly controlled chronic diseases, especially if they affect healing or bleeding

Local anesthesia is used during the procedure. The most uncomfortable part is usually the anesthesia stings for a few minutes, after which you feel pressure, not pain. After the procedure, the discomfort is usually mild.

The duration is usually around 6–8 hours, depending on the number of grafts and the area being filled (flaps, front line, parietal region). The exact plan is defined during the consultation and examination.

The number of grafts depends on: the size of the region, the density goal, the thickness of the hair and the skin/hair contrast. It is most accurately determined after measuring the area and assessing the donor region at the Poliklinka Dijamant in Sarajevo.

FUE leaves small point scars in the donor region that are barely visible immediately after the procedure, and a few weeks after the procedure, they are almost impossible to notice at all.

The first hair growth is often noticed around the 3rd month, a visible improvement around the 6th month, and the final result usually 9–12 months (for the scalp/crown sometimes even longer, up to 18 months).

Yes. There is often a “shedding” phase (shock hair loss) in the first few weeks when the hair falls out, but the follicle remains, which is a completely normal and expected process. After that, a new growth cycle begins.

Shock loss is the temporary loss of existing (natural) hair around the treated area due to stress and changes in circulation. It is temporary, but a good assessment of the quality of the existing hair is important before the procedure.

Redness, swelling, and scabs are common in the first few days. The scabs gradually disappear with proper washing according to our Polyclinic’s protocol, and most people look significantly more “normal” after 7–14 days.

Washing is introduced very early, i.e. the first wash is already the next day, with a special technique without rubbing and according to the clinic’s instructions. You will receive a precise protocol after the procedure at Poliklinka Dijamant Sarajevo.

For office work, many people return after 2–5 days, depending on how visible you want the scabs to be. For physical work, a break of about 7–14 days is often recommended.

Light walks are usually possible soon, but intensive training, gym and activities with heavy sweating are usually paused for about 10–14 days. Contact sports and swimming are usually postponed for longer, 2–3 months.

In the first few days, pressure on the grafts is avoided. After the initial period, the clinic may allow a wide, clean, non-tightening cap. The exact timing depends on recovery and the instructions of the Poliklinika Dijamant Sarajevo.

Transplanted hair from the donor region is long-lasting, not affected by androgenic hormones, and does not fall out during life, but existing hair may continue to fall out if the cause is androgenetic alopecia. Therefore, a long-term care and monitoring plan is important.

Most often: redness, swelling, itching, temporary numbness and folliculitis (small pimples). Very rare: infection or severe scarring. Proper hygiene and control reduce the risk.

It can, but it depends on the cause of hair loss (eg diffuse thinning requires a special assessment). At the Poliklinika Dijamant Sarajevo, a scalp diagnosis is recommended before making a decision.

As a rule, coloring is postponed until the skin has calmed down and the initial recovery phase has passed. The exact period varies, but a break of 2 to 3 months is often recommended, all according to the instructions of our Poliklinika Dijamant.

Look for: team experience, realistic “before/after” results with time points, clear recovery protocols, transparent graft plan, follow-ups and realistic expectations. Poliklinika Dijamant Sarajevo provides all this clearly and transparently, which can be checked on our website in the Experiences section, as well as on our social networks (Instagram, Facebook, TikTok), where you can also contact our patients.
